Actually, I remember reading somewhere where someone was trying something that amounted to using the last digit of the total as a data channel, to record how good the meal was and such; his plan was that at the end of the month he'd just record everything off his credit-card statement, rather than having to keep notes.
After that started getting what seemed to be bogus results, he changed to a different strategy of using the last digit of the sum as a checksum value on the rest of the amount.
What he discovered was that a lot of restaurants will just enter a rounded-off tip value into the credit-card machine anyway, IIRC, or at least that they typically entered the tip inaccurately enough that this was nowhere near an accurate data channel.
