Another book meme!

Via james_nicoll, Paul McAuley's attempt to come up with a list of essential fantasy and horror books.
As I went through the list, the transitions between fantasy and horror kept giving me a feeling of cognitive dissonance. The ones I have read are bold.

Of the ones you haven't read yet, I liked Carrie (3 out of 5 stars- worth reading, iconic, and yet flawed in some ways) and LOVED Grendel by John Gardner (solid 5 stars).

re: Another book meme!
I particularly liked The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, partly because I love that era of England and also because Joan Aiken is such a good writer. Or maybe it's because I read it and the sequels in my formative years. Or perhaps it's my fondness for young adult books that aren't all prettied up and dumbed down. I think I've got a copy of that one by my bed (along with 50 or so other books, some of which I've read and some not, all jumbled together). Perhaps I'll pull it out next.

Most of the books on the list I haven't read, and many I haven't even heard of. Someday I'll have to break myself of my regency romance addiction and branch out.....

What was so funny about the Led Zeppelin comment? :)

It won't sound at all funny if I explain it, but it mainly has to do with the fact that the music of the 70s, which I imprinted on as a teenager, was deeply reviled during the 70s and early 80s but eventually everyone decided that it was really great, cool music after all.

Alan Garner is YA, so generally quick reads, but lots of resonances and a sense of how some things can never be known.
