reading q&a

via [personal profile] micheinnz and [personal profile] hobbitbabe

1. What is your favorite genre to read?
Feminist speculative fiction, detective fiction.

2. What is the first romance novel you ever read and how old were you when you read it?
Not sure exactly what counts as a romance novel, but a book that impressed itself upon me in a "romance novel" way was Jane Eyre, which I first read when I was 12 or 13.

I didn't start reading things specifically classified as modern romance novels until very recently, when I started reading paranormal romances. One of the first was Jeaniene Frost's Halfway to the Grave.

3. How many books -- paper or ebooks -- are in your existing TBR pile?
I recently embarked on a book-gardening project and after looking at all the not-yet-read books in one bookshelf, and cataloging them into "to read," "to investigate" (check out whether I still want to read them), and "to give away," I have at least 75 books in the "to investigate" and "to read" pile. That's probably around a third or half of all my TBR paper books. I probably have about 30 TBR ebooks and about 45 un-listened-to audiobooks.

4. Do you read nonfiction? If so, from which sub-genre?
Popular science (astrophysics, biology, anthropology), linguistics, and the kind of history that's about a single commodity or technology. I also usually like whatever John McPhee writes.

5. Do you own an e-reading device? If so, which one(s)?
I don't have a dedicated one. I read books on my Android smart phone, my iPod Touch, and my iPad.

6. Which one book have you re-read most often?
Lord of the Rings, the Sherlock Holmes canon, and Jane Eyre are all in contention for this title.

7. How many library books do you have out right now?
Two. Endless Forms Most Beautiful: The New Science of Evo Devo by Sean B. Carroll, which I have read and highly recommend, and Mosquito by Andrew Spielman and Michael D'Antonio, which I haven't read yet.

8. How do you mark your place in a book?
I used to work at Apple and my department moved a lot and every time we moved I had to order at least 200 new business cards, which I never used because in-house editors working with in-house writers don't need to give out business cards. So I have hundreds of old Apple business cards and I usually use those.

9. About how many books do you typically read in a month?
I go through about 4-8 audiobooks a month and I read probably around 3-4.

10. What was the last book that made you cry?
There's pretty much only one thing that makes me cry when I'm reading a book, and that's (spoiler) dead cats. Then when cats appear in stories only to become dead cats, I also get mad. I'm looking at you, Mira, Lois, and Fumi Yoshinaga.

11. What was the last book that made you laugh?
The Master and Margarita (Russian: Ма́стер и Маргари́та) by Mikhail Bulgakov (one of the books I just moved from the "to investigate" pile to the "to read" pile)
