Daily soul search 191

From dailysoulsearch

What is art, to you? What isn't art? Where do you draw the line, if there is one?

Art is a product or performance that puts me in awe of the skill of the artist.

I used to say "If I can look at something and say 'I could do that,' I don't consider it art."

But now I've done some things I think are pretty artistic, myself.

I'm happy about that.

[Now back to wiriting my nanowrimono, which isn't art by that definition, not yet.]

To me, art is intention impacting on a person's interpretation.

For me art is expression that moves the viewer into a context which is distinct from the ordinary and the everyday. So, a natural landscape may be beautiful, but it isn't art because there wasn't an artist attempting to express something.

But, I think a cat can make art. For example, when kitty piles his litter so that it is all in one corner, and that is different than what he usually does, and different from what I usually notice, I think that's art, of a sort.

Notice, that this definition doesn't require that art be beautiful or uplifting or educational.

Art is more about creating an opportunity for a 'framed' situation by creating an expectation and then trying to fulfill it.

This is the best definition I've been able to come up with, after studying art and philosophy of art. Any other definition I've come up with has so many limitations.
