movie/director/actor favorites

I just posted this list of movie/director/actor recommendations in epi_lj's journal. I thought I'd post it to my own journal as well.

I'm not really looking for movie recommendations, because my Netflix queue is up to 150 or so, but if you feel like recommending any on the basis of these lists, feel free.

If you want me to describe in a sentence or two why I like any of these, I will.

And feel free to meme this if you want. (Eek, the editor part of me is attempting to strangle the LJ poster part of me for using "meme" as a verb!)

Here are some of my favorite movies.
2001: A Space Odyssey
Wings of Desire
L.A. Story
Harold & Maude
Bagdad Cafe
I've Heard the Mermaids Singing
Beauty & The Beast (disney animated version...although the Cocteau version is good too)

Here are some of my favorite directors who are consistently pretty good, with a couple of suggestions for each:
Peter Weir (Picnic at Hanging Rock, Fearless)
Kurosawa (Seven Samurai, Ran)
Miyazaki (My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away)
Stanley Kubrick (2001, as mentioned above; also Dr Strangelove)
Luc Besson (La Femme Nikita, The Professional)

Here are some of my favorite actors who I'll watch in pretty much anything, with some recommendations for each:
Alan Rickman (Galaxy Quest, Blow Dry, Truly Madly Deeply)
Judi Dench (Her Majesty, Mrs. Brown, and the TV series "As Time Goes By")
Jet Li (Fist of Legend)
Chow Yun Fat (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Anna and the King)
