I just finished watching Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings: Return of the King Extra Super Extended DVD edition for the first time. In commemoration of that, it seemed like a good idea to post this excellent essay about the problems that Tolkien causes modern fantasy writers. (I originally discovered it posted on genreneep by oracne.)

Amen. Or the elvish equivalent.

And I know why people keep copying Tolkien the wrong way: because it seems easier, or because they haven't thought about what Tolkien must have had to do. I run into this problem when teaching students all the time - they're focussed on the product, when I'm trying to teach them the process.
