social pressure

"If i was a devil's advocate, I'd say, nobody made you do those things, no one told you to do those things. Well if that's true then why have I worked with all these people all these years and they all think like me, and feel like me, and feel the same pressures, and are doing the same things?"

from Confessions of a Wal-Mart Hit Man

I'm quoting it not specifically because of the Wal-Mart reference but because of its applicability to so many kinds of pressure.

We are community creatures. Our biology demands that we live in some form of communal arrangement. We will create, then believe, all sorts of interesting things if believing them increases our sense of belonging and group well being.

It is amazing how quickly one's views can change when placed in a different environment. If the new environment is not radically different, a generic human will adapt in short order.

It is a fun study and part of my people watching. :)

That's why wise people choose their communities carefully.
