San Mateo County Fair

I went with bastette_joyce to the San Mateo County Fair this evening. We had gyros and pulled pork sandwiches, petted a lot of goats and sheep, and saw some fucking amazing quilts, lace, needlework, and so on while big band music played outside the door.

I had submitted my DNA scarf and two necklaces for the Home Arts exhibition. It's worthwhile to submit stuff even though there's a $2-$3 fee per item because you get two free passes and a free parking pass, which are worth about $25.

I won second prize in the "Wire Wrapped Jewelry" category. Go me!

Given the state of scientific knowledge in my country I suppose it was unreasonable of me to expect the folks setting up the exhibit to notice the DNA pattern in the scarf. They are displaying it wrong side up, and it's in a glass case so I couldn't get in to change the way it is displayed.

Yay! Good job! And sounds like you had a great time, too.

I love the county fair. It's my one connection to my family's rural background, or something.

Oh, cool. It's great to have a connection back "home". I realized a few years back that I'd lost the last connection back to my childhood town, and that's really strange.

I think the scarf is cool, even if they didn't get it. Did you take photos of the award-winning earrings?

Thanks! The item that won is a necklace that I gave my mom last year, and I have failed to take photos of it so far, but I'll do that before I give it back to her.

Congratulations! I went to the fair this afternoon, though I didn't go to the jewelry section, and apparently I missed your scarf. :\ But I did discover that the Best of Show painting of chrome on a motorcycle was painted by someone I met recently.

Weren't those quilts amazing? I loved that whole Home Arts section and might even try to take a second run at the fair for it.

Thanks! Nifty! Yes, I usually go several times, and admiring the quilts is a big part of it.

Go you! :)

I have to say that I've always found the phrase, "pulled pork," highly disturbing.

Thanks!

OK, I can see why!

Congratulations!

Congratulations!

Every time I go to the L.A. County Fair I think, "Next year I'll enter something." But I don't.

Quilts are my favorites, but I'm fond of goats, too.

Thanks!

You should. It's fun.

Just don't show the quilts to the goats.

Congrats!

Too bad about the scarf display. What does the wrong-side-up look like, just an ordinary white cable pattern (no DNA)?

There are some short indented bars. I'll take a photo when I get the scarf back. It kinda looks, like, modern and stuff, but...

Congratulations on your win! Yay!

Maybe you can re-enter your scarf next year...when people actually see the pattern, it'll win first prize. :)

Thanks! [grin] Unfortunately, you can only enter something you completed that year. I could always make another one though...

They got the DNA cable upside down? They're not fit to be judging knitwear. Congratulations on the win, though.
