Dead stingrays with their tails cut off have been found in Australia, sparking concern that fans of naturalist Steve Irwin may be avenging his death.

And the thing is, you know Steve would disapprove. He may have been a showman, but he loved the beasties just as they are.

Exactly. I didn't like the way he handled some of the animals he presented (I kept thinking "If I were that animal, I would be pretty upset"). But at least he didn't permanently harm them.

Apparently this subtle point was lost on some of his fans, or something.

My first thought, and I've not read the article yet, just the quote, is "Black-market relics" -- "Psst! I can sell you the very spine that killed Irwin!"

Well, if they are, I'm sure the stingrays are really, *really* scared now. Their terror alert must totally be in the orange.

Good grief, were these so-called fans not paying attention? Whenever Steve Irwin got injured by one of the animals he was showing to the cameras, he was always very clear that it was not the animal's fault.
