OK

The caretaking shortage has passed.

I'm going out of town for the weekend. Wish me an empty seat next to me on the plane. :-)

You do the same for me next week, and you've got a deal. ;-)

plane seats
FWIW, lately i've been buying two coach tickets when i fly. (luckily, i have a sponsor for my flights so it's financially possible.) it takes a little explaining at each step of the flight, but it works out really nicely.

i use the (true) excuse that i have a back injury; thus far that has warranted sympathy, special treatment, and interesting conversations. doubt things would be quite that accomodating if i just said it was because i'm fat.

also FWIW, my last plane trip was on american, and i witnessed a flight attendant retrieve a seat belt stretcher for a guy bigger than me and it was done completely discreetly. i only saw it because i knew what to look for. it made me want to cry...just like when i rode Amtrak several years ago, went to the dining car for breakfast, and had the server gently wave me away from his original intended seat for me at the bunkhead with the quiet comment: "i think you'll be more comfortable over here." none of the other patrons noticed what happened. (the bulkhead table is verrrry squishy.)

anyway, here's wishing you a sense of ample space and calm for the flight, regardless of what happens with the seats...

Re: plane seats
On the flight out, I upgraded to first class -- on Alaska you can do that for an extra $50 at the airport if first class isn't full. The flight was almost entirely full and I was very glad I upgraded.

And the flight attendant brought me a seatbelt extender without my asking. Yes, it's very nice when people are observant about where one will and won't fit, without being judgemental.

On the flight back, I was in the last row of the plane, but I had 3 seats to myself.
