I have no idea how the list was compiled (kshandra pointed me at the original source: an article claiming these are the 50 best TV shows of all time, at which I scoff); it seems to be missing a lot of important shows. But FWIW -

Heh, I think I could count the shows on this list that I've seen on one hand -- almost all are so recent as to way postdate the times I used to watch TV.

I, on the other hand, am shocked that I've seen at least one episode of about 20 of them. I've never owned a tv, and have seldom lived in a house that had one. Not sure what I think of the idea that they're all great shows. I guess I'm not missing much, not owning a tv.

Almost everything on the list is episodic fiction. There's a lot of better stuff on TV that isn't covered by the list, such as some of the HBO and BBC miniseries (the excellent I, Claudius comes to mind), and documentary series like Planet Earth.

I use my TV mostly to view DVDs.
