.... is connected to everything else.

The other day the OH and I had dinner at the English Rose restaurant in San Carlos. They had on a CD featuring a male vocalist I didn't recognize. I wasn't paying much attention, but then I heard him singing “Wild Is the Wind.” Previously I had only heard this song in a David Bowie version from Station to Station. It has been one of my favorite songs, especially because I love to howl it at the top of my lungs while driving.

The vocalist turned out to be Johnny Mathis. I bought his version, but he did in a way that seemed emotionally light-hearted, so I still liked the David Bowie version better.

I have the web page for the http://www.coverville.com/ podcast in my "Daily Lemming" bookmarks folder. The latest show featured the song "Feeling Good" as performed by Muse on Origin of Symmetry. micheinnz introduced me to Muse last year and I bought that CD. I hadn't realized it was a cover. At Coverville the chart for what they played in the podcast includes the original artist, which was Nina Simone. So I went and listened to the original version. I really liked it, so I began digging around in iTunes for some of the other stuff Nina Simone has done. And I discovered an album Nina Simone at Town Hall, released in 1959, that includes an awesome cover of "Wild Is the Wind." So far I have only listened to iTunes' 30 second clip, but I can tell her version is strongly emotional like Bowie’s version, but smoother. In comparison Bowie’s version now feels over-dramatic.

I am all excited about Nina Simone now, and I feel like I must have been living under a rock all my life because she had a long and successful career but I've never heard of her. Wikipedia says she recorded over 40 albums and iTunes has 1405 songs of hers for sale (some are repeats), and I'm not sure where to go next...

Oh, that's lovely for you! I adore Nina Simone so much that sometimes I *wish* I were just discovering her all over again!

Glad to have been of service!

And I gave a shout out to Coverville in my latest post, too. We're big fans here.

She's also a piece of the reason that pantryslut named one of her daughters Simone. (I thought you might like that fact.)
