New LJ community

12films_poc is a spinoff from 50books_poc. The community challenges you to watch and review 12 films written and/or directed by people of color.

This will be easy for me because I watch so many Japanese, Chinese, and Hong Kong movies already.

Comparisons are not the point, but the OH and I were talking about this community and he pointed out it would be (more of) a challenge for us to watch 12 films written and/or directed by women. Then we thought about watching 12 films that pass the Bechdel Rule.*

The Bechdel Rule states that a movie
1. It has to have at least two women in it,
2. Who talk to each other,
3. About something other than a man.
Here is the Dykes to Watch Out For strip in which it appeared.

Women Directors
Catherine Breillat (I find her work hard to watch)
Agnes Varda
Mary Herron
Patricia Rozema
Miranda July ***
Kathryn Bigelow
Jane Campion
Sofia Coppola
Joan Chen
Barbra Streisand
Leni Riefenstahl
Salma Hayek

Just to pick a round dozen. No Bechdel rule passing implied.

*** So good!

Do you plan to meet the challenge with those, or will you use this as an occasion to try anything that might not otherwise have hit your radar?

I've already added one movie to my poor, overburdened Netflix queue as a result of watching the community. And it's not Japanese, Chinese, or Hong Kong. However, it is Thai, and it has a queer/trans theme. I've already watched one movie in that subgenre - Beautiful Boxer, which is highly recommended if you don't mind martial-arts violence.

films by PoC
if anime and jdrama count, this would be incredibly easy for me; i watch way more than 12 in a year. :)

otherwise it would be very hard, because right now i am not even watching many movies written/directed by beige people, unless they're animation. somehow i don't seem to have the spoons for 1.5 hours of real life visual stimulation.

i don't feel that finding movies that pass the bechdel rule has become any easier over the years, or is that just my lack of general exposure talking?

Re: films by PoC
It's not any easier if you are talking big-budget general-distribution movies, IMO, and possibly not if you are talking Cannes-type movies either.
