Happy cat news

The cat I had in my picture wasn't euthanized! She went to a cat rescue organization.

The new picture is of Tucker, a cat who was at the shelter last summer.

Yes, I was so relieved.

I think the person who told me she was euthanized got confused because someone changed her name in the computer. She was originally named "Alice," but someone re-named her "Crabitha."

(Which isn't at all an accurate representation of her personality, but...)

But "Crabitha" is a very vivid name--it would be perfect for the right kind of cat. Oh, I'm glad she was rescued. I have a male cat who'd make a wonderful Crabitha.

Yep, I have to agree "Crabitha" is vivid.

Ha! "Crabithor." Either will do quite nicely, but he seems stuck on "Charlie" for now. Next crabby kitty I get is definitely Crabith(us)a. Ah! There's a new one: Crabithusa.

Naming cats
Unfortunately a cat is often named before you have a clear fix on its personality

Re: Naming cats
And sometimes the name makes the cat, or at least affects how you're going to treat her/him; self-fulfilling prophecies and all. But you're right--it can take a long time to figure out the finer points of a cat's temperament. There are always those few who loudly proclaim who they are from the first instant you see them, though.

Re: Naming cats
One cat I had was named "DC" short for "Damned Cat". It was thusly named for liking to play very rough with human apendages (string just wouldn't do). Funny thing, if you were willing to have your arm chewed up and play other games with him, like growling and chasing it around the living room, it would positively adore you.

Re: Naming cats
I maintain that naming an animal is like doing a magic spell. My parents made the mistake of naming one of their dogs Fricka (Teutonic queen of the gods) and she really acted like her.

My cat Selkie told me her name on the way home from the shelter. Don't ask me how she told me but she did.

I once had a momma cat and kittens. One of the kittens had a puffy round face and wasn't the sharpest claw in the paw. I decided to name him Booboo, thinking he'd outgrow it and I'd rename him them. He never did.
